In a perfect world, there would be no trouble getting to the gym for a workout. There would be one with multiple locations, one right around the corner, with classes at exactly the right time. And they’d have childcare. I could workout anywhere and anytime I wanted.
Or I’d have the kind of childcare arrangements that made it so I could go to the gym whenever I wanted, and workout with my husband. And I’d have a personal chef who created, shopped, and assembled all my meals.
Oh, and someone to do all the sweaty gym clothes laundry and clean the house while I was gone.
You see if I removed all of the hurdles that prevent me from going to the gym every day, I’d go right? Um, wrong. Sure, all of these things do pop up making me question whether going to the gym is the best option.
Somedays, I push it all aside and leave a cranky toddler, with chicken nuggets in the oven, and a mountain of laundry to be sorted. I leave it all in the trusty hands of my husband, who brings calm to the chaos and has three kids ready for bed, and one asleep, by the time I get home. Those are the days when I push really hard in the gym and come home feeling really glad I went.
And then there are the days where it just isn’t going to work. When there are spelling tests that need to be studied for or piano lessons to drive someone to. So what do I do then?
Honestly, I used to just skip that day. I’d call it an “off” day and just go about life instead. But then an off day turned into an off week and I would quickly spiral out of the habit of working out. Not good!
30 Minutes a Day
So now, thankfully, I have an alternative to working out at the gym. Enter GFit30. This is a program designed by someone else so I can workout anywhere with no equipment necessary, in less than 30 minutes. Let’s break down why this is so important.
- Programmed by someone else – the best thing about CrossFit is that it requires me to work on my weaknesses every day. If I had my way, we’d be doing squats every day. But while there is room for improvement in my squatting, there is much more room for improvement in other areas. And by following what someone else chooses as the workout, I am guaranteed to see improvement.
- Can be done anywhere – Yup, anywhere. Outside in the grass or at the soccer field during practice. In the living room while my toddler tries to lay on my back during push-ups. In the hotel gym, or hotel room, or dorm room. In GFit30 working out anywhere means you can truly workout anywhere.
- No equipment necessary – Gym equipment is expensive and usually doesn’t get used for it’s intended purpose. So there’s a huge benefit to a workout that you can do without equipment. (Yes, I know you have a treadmill, but what else is on it right now?) But when you can use your body and nothing else to complete an intense 20-minute workout, you will feel amazing. Trust me.
- Less than 30 minutes – with these workouts, you’ll be done in 30 minutes or less. Sometimes the instructions say “do as many rounds as you can in 20 minutes” and other times they say “do 5 rounds as fast as possible.” Either way, you control your fitness. Thirty minutes a day is the recommended amount of exercise, and with this program, you don’t even need to think about what you’re going to do.
Workout Anywhere? Really?
Yes, you can workout anywhere. Really. Here is a real-life example of how I’ve worked out using the GFit30 programming.
Let me set the scene. I had just put a pan of bacon in the oven for dinner, we were having burger bowls. Then I fired up my SmartWOD app on my phone and got to work.
20 minutes of as many rounds as possible:
- 5 sit-ups
- 10 push-ups
- 15 squats
My son was playing Xbox, my daughter practicing the piano, my toddler playing with his cars. The dog was the only one who was in the way because she thinks anything on the ground is up for cuddles. By the time I was 15 minutes in, the kids had moved on to homework and my toddler was mimicking my every move. Twenty minutes later, I finished, took the bacon out of the oven, finished dinner assembly, and hopped in the shower. What usually takes me almost 2 hours to complete (driving to the gym, working out, driving home) was done in 20 minutes. That fit my lifestyle that day.
