Using essential oils for aromatherapy is something even the most skeptical person can usually get behind. Applying them topically to your body is a stretch for some people. And when I start talking about cooking with oils is when I usually lose people entirely.

So, let’s start out at the beginning, what are essential oils?

What are Essential Oils? 

Essential oils are distilled (or pressed) directly from plants. Young Living extracts the goodness from the plant using one of two methods, careful steam distillation or cold pressing. They take a liquid form and are aromatic and have been used for thousands of years for many purposes. Those purposes include cosmetic, spiritual, and emotional.

Essential oils quickly penetrate the skin, contain some of the most potent antioxidants, and some of them have the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier. They can benefit your body in many ways!

Why cook with Young Living?

Well, before I get into the many reasons I like to cook with Young Living Vitality™ Oils, I want to explain the difference. Young Living has adhered to the request of the FDA to label oils for one purpose only. A few years ago, a bottle of Young Living Tangerine would have therapeutic and supplement on the label, indicating it was intended both for aromatherapy and ingestion. Now there are two bottles of tangerine, one with a therapeutic distinction, and one part of the Vitality™ line that has a white label and is designated as a supplement. (They are still the same oil, made the same way.)

Ok, now the reasons I like to cook with Vitality™ Oils!

  • Unlike spices, they don’t go bad or expire.
  • They take up less space.
  • They are already added to your food as flavoring agents.

How do I do it?

Let’s say a recipe calls for one tablespoon of lemon juice, but I don’t have any on hand. I can use Lemon Vitality™ oil easily! A general rule for conversion is one drop per teaspoon. You may prefer to add one drop at a time, particularly of more potent oils like oregano or vitality, as you can’t scoop it back out if you add too much.

One tip is to use a toothpick to swirl just a bit of oil out of the bottle and then swirl it into your dish. This technique is great for those just starting out and for the times you need less than a teaspoon’s equivalent in your recipe.

Drink Up.

I also really like adding Vitality™ oils to my drinks. Just as you may add a slice of lemon or lime to your water, you can add a drop or three of citrus oil. Adding a drop is so much easier than cleaning and slicing a lemon! My favorites in water include grapefruit, lime, and tangerine. The citrus oils are cold pressed from the peel of the fruit. If you are on certain medications and have to avoid grapefruit, you may want to read this and decide if Grapefruit Vitality™ is a good fit for you.

I also add them to hot beverages, such as coffee. A drop of peppermint in coffee is delicious. I also save Thieves Vitality™ and Lemon for when I am feeling under the weather and drink hot tea or water. Something about this combo soothes my soul.

Real Life Uses in the Kitchen

Enough general uses of Vitality™ oils, let’s talk actual life substitutions and recipes.

Peppermint Brownies

Brownies are one of Abi’s favorite things to make. In fact, whenever she’s explaining oils to someone else, she grabs the Peppermint Vitality™ and explains just why there is chocolate smudged on the top. We take our favorite brownie recipe (or box mix) and add four drops of Peppermint Vitality™ to it. That’s it! Voila!


I use Cinnamon Bark Vitality™ in several recipes, ranging from breakfast to dinner. When I make French toast, I add a drop of Cinnamon Bark and a drop of Nutmeg Vitality™ in the batter. My husband makes his chili with a dash of cinnamon, which he easily substitutes a drop of oil for the ground. And when we make Snickerdoodles? We break out the Vitality™ oils.


Frequently I don’t have a specific spice that a new recipe requires. Whether it’s because I ran out or because I try to keep things to a minimum in my kitchen, I am left running to my oil case to see if I have the corresponding Vitality™ oil. I usually do. I am especially guilty of running out of lemon juice or not having any lemons and limes to zest. A drop of each of these and my problem is solved!
